Nice shot, hankbeblazin! It's good to see you're enjoying your D40.

I do believe a little bit of in-camera D-lighting is the only adjusting that photo needs to mitigate the darkness of the full-sun shadows. Not too much, though, or it would lose its depth.

No problem. Digital image post-processing takes getting used to just as taking photos does, I'm sure it won't take ya long to get a foothold in the process. A lot of it is just opening the photo up in an editor and playing with sliders until you get something good (then trying to remember what you did to get there).
