Tim,
It is amazing that the ruins survive in the area with the growth. Somedays my head feels like that at work, maybe crop in close on the roots and call it "temple gets a migrain".

Trees are amazing. They grow where it seems impossible to grow. They can grow anywhere except where you want to plant them.
It is said that those trees first came with a bird's droppings. They grew and wedged their roots into the pores and cracks of the temple. They became parts of the temple itself and strengthened the structure for only as long as they are alive. But they died they took the temples with them. Many of those temple are under restoration projects.

Probably how these "Canyon Survivors" were planted as well.
Growing in the crook of the rock outcrop, is what I think is about a 60+ foot cedar.

And this guy is just amazing. Talk about a lone pine.
