    Maybe you can put a flash to lighten up the darker side of the face a little?

    IMHO, it's better with the shadows. Traditionally we try and use flash to fill these in as Tim suggested but the mood of this photo is better suited to the depth of light and dark.

    +1 on that. Gives him a "man of mystery" appearance. Tell him he'd look like this if you used flash (see below). That should make him appreciate your talents.
