    Back to Christmas Lights...

    Neighbor's house.

1st Shot... No enhancements... Just resize for web.
2nd Shot... From NEF file - Some Fill effects to lift the shadows... Shows some of the dynamic range that is not available in the jpg.

TNB, excellent comparison with the NEF/JPEG. I really like how the shadow adjustment brought out the water fountain thingy(lol) on the right hand side.

That Nikon 17-55 sure is a winner, I cant wait to get my hands on one!

You mean tcadwall, lol. And yes, the NEF/JPG comparison shows how much more you can get out of RAW than from a regular JPG image. The thing about the RAW is that it brings out a lot more noise, but the images look good.

TNB, your images are so crisp and clear with that 17-55mm and your D200. I can't wait until I save up enough to have both of them in my hands one day.

yeah the noise is evident in the sky, but I didn't want to spend much time 'perfecting' the image since it pretty much was a throw away image anyway. I didn't care much for that particular framing. Especially since the roadway showed up so much. I did put some noise reduction into it a little, but I was keying in on the fence post, and trying to preserve as much detail as possible, this resulted in very nice 1:1 results for the driveway, but when you zoom back out and look at the sky it came out pretty noisy.

Anyway, it was pretty much an exercise. If you would have tried to bring out the "shadow" detail using the jpg it would have still been noisy, but then it would have been blocky AND noisy. I don't think that noise really changes much between jpg and nef files. You can really eliminate quite a bit of noise either way as long as your exposure was good, and lets face it, exposure with as little light as I had available wasn't easy.

At that same session I was playing with quite a few exposure settings, this one had a fairly open aperature if I remember correctly, I ended up getting some better results somewhere around f8. at f11 I found issues with the white lights looking like colored lights. Obviously, dispersion was the culprit there.
