Like you, I have way more than I can comprehend to learn about this stuff. the umbrella was positioned about 5 feet off the floor, to my 4 o'clock and above so just alittle behind me and a little to my right and above me.

I am kinda upset. I was on assignment to cover the retirement of a few American flags (they get burned). But instead, it monsooned outside. I talked to my editor and he was concerned that I didn't get anything. I then replied, "Oh, I got a picture of them standing around trying to figure out what the hell to do".

Apparently, thats funny because he laughed pretty hard.

So is your editor a member of the American Legion or any veteran's organization for that matter? I'm just wondering since it appears that many people don't really know about Flag Day, especially those who aren't members of the American Legion or VFW.

No. He is not. But this American Legion Post seems to always be contacting the newspaper about events. The local newspaper always does something when they call.

Kudos to your local paper. I'm sure the old timers in that post really appreciate it. And by old timers, I mean WWII-era or even 1950-53 Korean war veterans.

Ok, I know what you are thinking of. And no, it is NO WAY in ANY WAY like what you see on TV.

This ceremony is to retire a flag that is no longer servicable (torn, holes, faded colors, etc). Flags get old and used up, this is a way of disposing the flag with honor. I cannot fully describe the process (I haven't attended one in quite a few years, and I can't remember) but the word, "Respect" sums it up pretty good.

I hope someone else can elaborate more on this.

    See: 4 U.S.C. 1 § 8. Respect for flag
    (k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
