I feel like I just can't get the sharpness/focus I want. My camera is currently set to JPG-Large-Normal setting. It seems like my focus is off on most pictures.
you're shooting at 1.8 which is a very shallow dof and its not really the lens' sweet spot. i'd be stopping down to f2 or 2.8 even better, you will notice a significant improvement in dof and contrast stopped down a little.
there is nothing at all wrong with the flower shot you just posted from a focus/ sharpness POV imo.
goes without saying that shooting in raw will give you better all round images and more control.
