Went to Burkes lookout in Mt Dandenong to try out my recent purchase Nikon 18-35. Hoping to go back there during sunset, although I will have to check which direction the lookout faces. Did a couple of panoramas, one shot in landscape with 2 images. After a tip saying shoot the images vertically, I tried that out and here's the result of 6 images stitched in CS3. I can understand now why Thom Hogan stitches images together, rather than carry a D3X. The fullsize image is equivalent to about 26MP.

Went to Burkes lookout in Mt Dandenong to try out my recent purchase Nikon 18-35.

After a tip saying shoot the images vertically, I tried that out and here's the result of 6 images stitched in CS3.

First of all why were you up there without letting me know? I was out and about yesterday with camera and tripod on the bike looking for things to shoot at.
The real problem up there is haze, it's very difficult to get a clear shot with any great distance in the photo.

I use vertical for panoramas all the time, horizontal tends to end up with a photo that has no real height to it. Something I saw and tried recently is the shotgun approach rather than the careful approach. Just set up the focus and exposure manually then put the camera in continuous fast shooting mode and start on the left, finger on the trigger and swing towards the right. It worked really well when I tried it.
One more tip from Matt Kloskowski. Take a photo of your hand immediately before the panorama and immediately after the panorama then it's really obvious where it starts and stops when you are going through a whole days worth of photos that all look similar in thumbnail views.

Do you know if Burkes lookout faces the sunset? With that technique, you'd have to be using a fairly high shutter speed I believe. Otherwise you'd get some motion blur from panning. I'll try that next time and see how that goes. Do you find you get too much overlap when you're shooting at 6fps?

Burkes lookout faces west so yes in that sense it faces the sunset. Whether you will see the sun through the trees will depend on the time if year and how far north or south the sun is. I would think that at the moment you should be okay.

I posted this a while ago so I won't repeat (large size here) but I used the rotate technique on this and it came out really well. In fact the MS ICE software even sorted out the guys who were moving all with one click.
