DPR,
Over here in the US we forget most countries think our gas is cheap (unless you live in an OPEC producer nation). Lots to see in 5 weeks one way west to east. There are certainly a few of us here that would have lots of photo or just plain sight seeing suggestions. I have been to all the states, most for more than a week each. Even done several grand loops coast to coast in a car over the years. If you are looking for photo guidance there are a fair number of books on the big parks and other iconic locations. If you really want to have a bit of adventure you might consider picking up a couple of tents and light bags to do a bit of car camping in the parks. Probably only run you $700 to get some stuff that will work for 1-2 days a week. Cheap enough if it replaces $200 in hotel costs each use.

I suppose that it depends on the goal of the vacation. Since you are planning to start in LA... Maybe a day in Disneyland and/or Universal Studios, to start. LA is pretty hectic (especially the freeway system), so (IMHO) leaving LA after those venues is a good idea.
After that either head North on 101 then to the Coast Hwy 1 at San Louis Obispo to San Francisco (via Big Sur and Monterey). Once in the SF Bay Area you can head east to Yosemite and Sequoia. If The Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon are on the agenda, then east on Hwy 120 to Hwy 395 South (Mono Lake is another excellent stop) to Hwy 58 East, then either to I15 or I40 all of those parks are within 90 miles of each other (as the crow flies). Beware that I15 takes you through Sin City (Las Vegas) then to Zion (Hwy9 & 89), Bryce Canyon, and then South to The Grand Canyon.
Once off the main interstates the roads get pretty curvy. Highway 89 is a spectacular drive all by itself, but would take a few days from Bryce to Phoenix. Once in GC you can hop over to I40 at Williams and head East. I40 takes you through the Desert Southwest then up through the middle of the US. The three main East-West Highways are I10 (Southern) I40 (Central) I80 (Northern).
If you are planning to stay at the State and National Parks then you might want to make some of the reservations now as these venues fill up pretty quick. As a side note the Grand Canyon Railway at Williams (AZ) is a lot of fun.

There was me thinking that this was a picture of the day thread. Surely travel discussion could be in a thread of it's own?

Well... about unrelating subjects in this thread... with a new thread so rare and far in between, it only makes sense to create new ones when it comes to a new camera or a new vacation. I know hot easy it is ti veer off though.
