So it seems I'm taking a family driving holiday to the US in a few months, I'll ask you all for some advice shortly. And hopefully it's not all related to the above comment on her camera gear though I am contemplating a detour to New York for B&H.

Like Australia. There's a lot of ground to cover. I've covered a lot of it over the years. Of the 2.5 million air miles I've flown in the past 25 years, almost half was domestic. Wish I had carried my camera more.
Note: Costco has a D600 kit with 24-85 and 70-300 VR's for $2400.
