IMHO and not to speak for Rooz... but the raindrops and space to the right are where the attention (and amazment) is focused, so taking it away would affect the feeling of the shot.

The test is to take some tripod shots then.

Yup. Done.

Better but...

You can see there is no motion blurr, but even at ISO400 (it was a dark area) it's not what I expect.

I would say that the lens needs a calibration adjustment. Just purely for an exercise try manual focus with live view and see what happens (on a tripod).

If you have another lens use that as a comparison. Obviously if all your lens' aren't sharp it's a camera problem.

Yeah. Did that, almost identical result.

Unfortunately all of my lenses, including the 50 f/1.8 do about the same.

Many, many, thanks guys. Always a good idea to get multiple opinions. This has been driving me a little daft, and the problem seems to be getting worse instead of better. I have a decent set of lenses, that worked great on the D70 and a freinds D300.

Back to Nikon. Love the camera... hate the images.

Just to completely eliminate a lens issue if you still have the d70 why not take the same shot with the same lens but two different bodies.

Yup. The D70 is my 2nd body. Will run the gammut with both... just to make sure.

Bottom line... not happy with many (most) of the shots I'm getting. It's a killer to frame a nice image and have it turn out crap.

It's bloody frustrating to have gears that don't function the way they should be.
Lately I found out I got a lot of blurry shots but it turns out that in the process to hold the camera steady I sometimes hold the lens hood instead the lens. Bad habit now corrected.

Thanks again guys. Here are the D70 shots. Same 10-105 VR on a tripod. Later in the day so ISO @200 and SS @ 1/25sec
All shots, including the D7000 are unprocessed NEF (12 bit on the D70 and 14 bit on the D7000).

I think you will agree that the D70 is much sharper than the D7000... hence my chagrin.
