Tim, can you post the original with no PP? Just curious as to what the original looked like. Another great perspective shot.

I shoot in vivid mode most of the time (D70 and D7000 NEF). I agree with the blown-reds problem but I find with most reds that the images are actually over saturated (more so on the D7000) even with picture control set to standard. Once I back it down, (red)details return with more natural color.

Thanks for the compliment. But I think it's just the matter of being there at the right place.
The problem with taking shots at such a popular monument is that there have been already tens of thousands of similar images that people have seen and mine isn't any different to Jack's, Bill's, Peter's, Mary's and Jane's snapshots of their iPhone. That always poses a challenge for composing from a different perspective.
One day maybe we arrange for interested members of this forum to go on a photographic excursion there. I will be the guide and interpreter all free of charge.

The difference between a snapshot and a "hanger" is what is seen through the lens. 1000 people take snapshots Yosemite Valley but very few can duplicate Adams. Sometimes opportunity is the deciding factor, but it's what you do with the opportunity that sets the image apart. What is done in post processing can also have an dramatic influence on the image, and again it's all in how you picture the setting in you own visualization.

My problem is that when I'm driving (or walking) along I'm visualizing what might make a good image. I used to take my camera with me everywhere. This drove my wife (and friends) crazy (must have been the influence of working for Japanese companies for 11 years ). I'm getting better (not really). Sometimes what I think is a great image is just so-so to others, because they were not there... and vice versa.

You are doing well. Keep it up.

Guys, I said maybe one day. So if the world isn't going to end on the 21st then there is still a chance.
Originally, I was hell bend on retaining the original feel and look of the images. Which is the reason I feel frustrated when I couldn't get the image to strike an impact. I realise there's no reason why I had to do that, so from now on it's a new ball game.
Here's a few more from the same temple. I decide to leave the images on the bigger side so the small details and carvings aren't lost.

I would have thought it was obvious -- it's a rice strainer for the busy bachelor, complete with handy built in drain tube. OTOH, if you turn up the gamma setting, it morphs into a set of headphones, sitting on an amplifier....

If you're looking for images that pop Tim, I reckon you've nailed it with photo #2. What an awe-inspiring (and intimidating) temple that must have been in its hey-day! And perhaps one day I'll take up your offer....

I originally came here seeking advice because I was frustrated with the low light capability of the Panasonic FZ20. Remember that camera?
Finally, at the moment that someone commented that I nailed it with an image (Thanks Sir Les) DCResource is to close down. See Jeff's announcement. I have to post a few more before that date.
