Actually, his 70-300 is a 1:2 Macro, which is plenty for flowers. However, he lists it as HSM which is slightly innaccurate. He almost certainly has the version with the built in motor that works with his camera, but the motor is not the HSM motor that is in some of Sigma's lenses.

Guys the flower shoots are from the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro that I just bought, I forgot to update the sig. Damn I so wished my 70-300 could do it.
Btw the sigma 105mm does not auto focus on my D40, since its the older version without the built-in motor, but to my surprise manual focus is a blast, i have never had so much fun shooting a macro.
