    Welcome, Old School!

The first one is a very nice nice shot. Looks like you used the on-camera flash? I love the second image you put up, she shadows and light reflections on the leaves look great, as well as the bokeh on the background!

Yup, you nailed it. 1st shot was with the kit lens of the D40, onboard flash used.

2nd was with that 40 year old 55mm micro nikkor.

Just got this D40 like last month, before that I was shooting with an old Nikon F that I inherited (along with all the glass you see in my sig)

    Thanks for the comments

    Welcome Old School, cool username.

I think that 1st shot is brilliant, you nailed the focus and DOF perfectly and that blue eye is very attractive. I don't object to the direct flash at all.

I don't really have an opinion one way or the other on the 2nd (leaf) shot. I like the way the leaf edge leads up to the right through the frame and I think it's a great idea. As a preference I think there's a bit much whitish stuff for my taste though.

Thanks It's the only way I know how to shoot. Can't figure out autofocus to save my life. This D40 is SUCH a leap from my old F.

That's high praise comin from you, dude. I've seen your work- I took the time to read every page up to now in this thread. It's all spectacular.

Are you referring to the sun reflection in the drops? What exactly does "whitish stuff" mean?

Don't take that as a question on you, I'm honestly just curious. I really, REALLY want to get as good as I can and the way I see it, the more questions I ask, the more I'm able to learn.

    Thanks in advance!

Turo. that is a really nice 3D look of the flower!

LBChris. nice sharp picture of the lizard.

Welcome Old School. I like the picture of the leaf myself. I like the little water reflection.

I thought I give it a shot on Mr Peterson's famous picture.

Try tilting it anti clockwise so the word casino is vertical. I think it will look better.

Very nice one Accord, we've got our annual show on at the moment and I almost went just to get a shot like this one you posted. BTW if you're copying Petersons shots, perhaps you could post one like his wife in the pool

Thank you old school, I'm just trying my best and learning a little every day with the help of the great people here.

By white stuff, a lot of leaves are whitish underneath, hairs or something I guess. For me that drops the contrast a bit. However as I have a new monitor and I'm not 100% sure on my calibration yet I'm definately not giving a reliable opinion. I like the sparkles in the water drops btw. I think it's a good shot, it's not 100% my taste if you know what I'm trying to say.
