I saw these guys playing chess and wanted to snap a picture, but it was pretty low light and I did not want to flash them (they were very concentrated on their game and I did not want to disturb them). When I transfered the image to my computer it looked pretty dark, so I went B&W with it and messed with the levels to get something out of it. I wasn't too crazy with the results:

A day at the races
Hi folks,
I've been lurking for a bit but thought I would solicit some feedback. I've had my D40 for a year but am still pretty green in most aspects of photography.
First question? I'm pretty gun shy when it comes to upping the ISO at all because of noise fears. Can someone allay my fears or give me some basic guidelines, for, say, sports?

320 / ƒ5.6 / 300mm / ISO 200
Other feedback/post-processing suggestions welcome.

Welcome.
Don't worry about using higher ISO. In reality you will be hard pressed to see any difference in pictures between ISO 200 and ISO 400 and ISO 800 will still produce great results most of the time. Once you get to ISO 1600 you will see a bit of noise but would you rather have a slightly noisy photo or no photo? Noise can be fixed with software it's a bit hard to recreate an image from memory.
Just go out and take shots and see what they look like to you. If you don't try you will never know what happens.
As far as the picture you posted I like it but I would have cropped it just behind the riders on the right so that the image didn't end with somebodies backside but instead with a little bit of space for the lead rider to be riding into.
