thanks for the feedback you guys. I'm not sure what to say but i'll try and figure out my camera a bit more. I wasnt completely blaming the poor thing. I was just saying that I kinda thought it would've handled it better. I've taken shots in similar settings before (just not with a white top) and had little problem. Anyway, the photo I posted probably isnt the best sample anyway but yea. Thanks again!

Sorry about that, when I wrote pattern, I simply copied it from the properties. The metering for that shot was matrix. Btw I have a Nikon D60

jemr - check out Imaging Reource's review of your D60 - it's very informative and should help quite a bit.
as fare as your metering goes - in your menu there are 3 options, as described before:
Matrix is Nikons clever 3D colour system which analises the scene and decides how to expose - also cross refering to a 30,000-image database for judging exposure.
Centre weighted uses the centre area for about 75% of it's exposure calculation
Spot just uses a small area in the middle
