delobbo, for stitching panos, the best program I've found is Autostitch.

The interface is a bit rough but it works like magic.... I won't post an example here (it was shot with a Canon!), but if you search my flickrstream for 'mirage', you will find one of the Mirage hotel in Vegas which was shot handheld).

hey thanks for the tip - have you tried PhotoStitch at all? that's what I'm trying - the one that comes with the Canon software. Does it just suck or do I suck lol.

This is a great shot. I really like the composition and it has a classic color scheme to it.

It isn't HDR if it was only one shot though. What all did you do to it? Often times I see people tone map single images to create a pseudo-HDR look (surreal, dreamy) but it looks like you didn't go that route here, which I like.

single-shot HDR is considered HDR just as multiple shot - it may be denoted as "single-shot HDR from RAW" or something of that nature. It is NOT the same as a "pseudo-HDR", which you can do with a single JPG. At least, this has been what I have seen at various sites. Also just because it says HDR doesn't mean it necessarily has to "look" like what you would typically think is an HDR.

Rooz, how do you use off-camera flashes at the zoo? Do you have friends hold them?

they have little feet so i just stand em on the ground or bungee cord it to a post or a tree or something.

delobbo, as you found, the problem is that photostitch sucks!

My brother shot a 9-shot pano (in a 3x3 grid) a couple of weeks ago... handheld, just picking roughly the right spot, and autostitch brought it all together. Its a cool program (and the price is right!)

I was trying to avoid the over processed look of many of the HDRs you see around. I was hoping for a good looking shot that you weren’t sure if it was or wasn’t an hdr. I think that less is more on this situation. I know that it is not exactly a true hdr but with Lightroom and the raw format I feel you can still get pretty nice results.

As far as the work that was done, there was many steps. First, I saved the two separate images from Lightroom and used photmatix to create the HDR. Then I took out all of the ads and signs that made it look present day. I also cloned out a few grounds keepers. This was followed by using the "aged grayscale" preset as a base and then worked on the levels, curves, contrast......etc in lightroom. It was an experiment in post production to see if I could take a very average and boring shot and make something out of it. I am sure you will be seeing plenty more of these due to the amount of fun I had playing with this one.

Look I don't feel like typing out a long response because my wrist is killing me, but HDR cannot be achieved by a single capture. The very meaning of the term itself requires multiple exposures to achieve high dynamic range (more DR than any image sensor can capture). A single image whether its RAW or JPEG doesn't matter - it isn't HDR no matter how you slice it.

It doesn't mean you can't get good results, you just can't call it HDR.

You refer to the HDR "look". I know what you refer to, and it comes from incorrect processing usually in Photomatix. Not enough light smoothing, too much strength and saturation. That is not what HDR is supposed to look like - in fact, when HDR is done properly you can't tell its an HDR image. There is no "HDR Look", it's all created on the internet. Look back a few pages...the night shot I posted was a 3 capture HDR merge. Bet you didn't know?

Wait, are we talking about the same thing? an HDR from a single-shot RAW using Photomatix tone mapping, which happens to be the SAME WAY you would do an HDR with multiple exposures (using Photomatix), except using a single RAW file?
