This is a really cool shot, but I gotta ask..... Do you understand exposure any better?

I was shooting an indoor drum line competition, I can't use flash during the program, however I caught this young preformer just prior to going on.

    sb800 with diffuser manual setting.
cropped a bit. red eye because of the long lens. I like the overall effect so the only other enhancements are to pop up the eyes a bit and crank up the contrast a bit. Otherwise expression and makeup are all hers.

    Nikon d200
    300 mm
    f8
    1/60
    iso 500
    sb800 camera mounted.

I thought red eye was caused by the subjects pupils being wide open due to the dark conditions when the flash goes off. I think it's also worsened by having the flash close to the camera.

    esp, I like that one.

Wouldn't the use of a long lens effectively make it seems as though the flash is closer to the lens? If the point of focus is 50 feet away versus 5, doesn't the line of the lens and the flash become more parallel causing the light to bounce more directly back at the lens?

You are correct, in this case the effective length due to sensor size is 450mm. and the subject was actually fairly close to me also in a less than bright area her eyes were wide open. Normally I just correct for this and go on. However I liked the intensity with the make up etc. So I left them. I did not alter the red in any way, only slightly punched up the blue in her eyes.
