I have been experimenting a lot with Capture NX lately. Especially with the brush selection tool, with which you can apply curves locally. Here is one of the results, straight out of capture NX except for resizing and the border:
Nikon D-50
// Nikkor 70-300 f/4-5.6 VR // Nikkor 50 mm f/1.8
// Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 ...// Nikon SB-600
// Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6......// Nikon Series E 135 mm f/2.8
// Kiron 105 f/2.8 Macro....// Manfrotto 190XPROB + 488RC4
// Nikkor 35 f/1.8..........// Sigma 500 mm f/8

Hank,
Another thing that could be done in the future with that type of a shot is a fill-flash... I would use one for this shot. I am not sure how much of a crop you did on the shot, but if you were as close as it appears, or even a bit further, a fill flash would have probably brought out the details in his face that you are likely wishing you had. Even brightening in post won't always give you the details that you want. Especially if you shot it in jpg. Shoot it raw, use a fill flash when the sun is behind the subject. Even in raw the darker portions of a shot are harder to brighten with detail than you might think.
That said, it is still a great shot since you were in the right place at the right time, and even though the shadows could have used some fill, you still exposed it pretty well. It is a great start. I agree though that the shot will probably be editable in post with a quite acceptable result.

Prospero, I always enjoy your shots. Did you post this one before (with less dramatic pp)? It looks familiar, but I am pretty sure the previous one was quite good too.

I know it has been said before, but that poor kid is going to grow up thinking that his father is a Nikon.
