400D, 70-200/4 IS, and 50/1.2 L

Canon EF 70-200 f/4 L IS



- 20 elements, 15 groups
- 1 Flourite element, 2 UD elements
- Weather sealed
- 4th generation IS claims 4 stops (equivalent to Nikon's new VRII)
- 1.2m MFD (same as the old lens)
- 67mm, 760g, 76 x 172 mm (A little bit heavier than the original)
- Available for $1250 in November (ouch!)

- 1 Aspheric element
- 8 circular aperture blades
- Weather sealed
- .45m MFD
- 72mm, 580g, 85 x 66.5 mm (Much bigger than the 1.4 version!)
- Available for $1600 in November

The bad news is that it was constantly compared to the 85/1.2 which can only suggest that the price will be high. The weather sealing comment doesn't help either. Speculation points to a price tag in the mid $1000's.

The IS2 sounds neat but I think it'll be probably overpriced, I bet 1299 msrp.

That 50 would be great if it wasn't such a wierd FOV on a crop camera. f/1.2 typically comes in handy indoors...and 50mm is a bit long indoors on a 1.6x...IMOH (In My Own House lol).

Damn, I'd love to have that 50 1.2L . . . but I won't fork over 1500 to get it either.

oh no, this just reminds me of all the "new gear bashing" that's going to happen, as it always does. in other places there's been alota bashing of a certain photography related product that was just released not too long ago - funny part is that a lot of the bashers clearly don't have any real experience with the product while the people who should have the most to say: the actual users, complain the least. i wonder what's going to be said about the 400d this time around

Hmmmm, I knew there was a reason I sold my 50mm f/1.4 a few months ago. There is a vacant space all ready to welcome a new guest...

Just like the 85 f1.8 and 85 f1.2 co-exist, so shall the 50 f1.4 and 50 f1.2. The medium grade one is one great lens. Sure can't see it affecting price, different class.

Still;I'm currently in love with the 35L. I really didn't use the 50 much due to FL, although for portriats it's a nice length (50).

35 is a nice b'tweener for narrow landscape, scene, and people shooter. I'm glad there wasn't a choice or I would have gotten the less useful (for me) 50 length of L. I guess 50 will fill the b'tweener gap for those who can't decide between 35 and 85.

So then, "The Trilligy" gets a sister.

That 70-200 IS looks sweet. I'll enter the pool at $1199 intro.
