What is a filter thread, and Nokia D50, Canon IXYS70 or Canon EOS30D

First, just what is a filter thread, and is it an essential when camera hunting?

Second, when I was here a couple of months ago, asking for a recommendation for a good family camera, the Nokia D50 was recommended. Now, I'm comparing it to two other camera's that other people have recommended, the Canon Digital IXUS70 and the Canon EOS30D. There are some serious differences in prices here, and I'm flummoxed. Any opinions anyone?

A filter thread is what's used to connect a glass filter to the front of your lens - like screwing a lid onto a jar (except the thread is on the outside).

Never heard of the Nokia D50 - sounds like a camera phone!

The IXUS is a Point & Shoot camera - convenient but a compromise for serious photography. The 30D is a mid-range digital SLR - great for serious photography but a compromise to convenience.

You probably mean Nikon D50, a lower end competitor to the Canon 30D.

Neither will fit into your purse, and both will likely lead to more expense for interchangable lenses.

Its a question of need really. Suggest filling out this survey unless you already have decided on a Digital SLR.

Nokia/Nikon... just shows my level of photo knowledge!

As I'm not a serious photographer, just a wife & mother wishing to capture her family as they grow, I think filter threads and add on lenses etc might be a bit beyond me.

Thank you for pointing out the questionaire. I shall be completing that & posting in a new thread. You've been very helpful.
