A clear, high quality, multi-coated UV filter will have no noticeable effect in your photo. All digital cameras already filter out UV light. So, the only reason to put a UV filter in front of your lens is to protect it.

i was just looking at a hoya uv filter today and on the back had the "with UV filter" pic and the "no UV filter" pic and there was some difference

and ive read accounts basically what you (JTL) have said

must be an attempt to sell them, or ive looked at the wrong one

UV filters do have an effect, just quite a lot less than with film. It can still get rid of some haze in the distance.
