    Angry Recieved S3/my first Canon

Is it just me or does Canon expect you to already be very familiar with their set up/operation as soon as you open the box? So far, I've had to discover everything on my own and the neckstrap has been a nightmare.

Hopefully this will all rectify itself soon because I've been reading both the basic and advanced menu's and they are of absolutley no help as of yet. None.

I've tried to use the colour swap and colour accent features with absolutley no results whatsoever. And macro/supermacro mode wont focus.

    Very disappointed so far.

I am tremendously unimpressed with this, given I spent $450.00USD

    argh.
Perhaps I just recieved a lemon?

So far every digital canon camera ive ever messed with has all been the same as far as how you scroll threw the modes and change everything. My first canon digital was an A60, then i got an A70 and an A510 then an A85 and now i have the S2 so it was an easy transition. The A60 was very basic, the A70 is pretty much the same camera the A510 and A85 just had a few more features. The S2 was a big jump it had alot more stuff and took me a while to figure out what everything does. I still learn stuff when i use it, little settings here and there you learn how they work and what they are for.

I was like you at the begining i wasnt that impressed with the camera because i didnt know how to use it properly. It seems the one i have had stock settings maxed out for quality. Once i read around what settings to change and why it got alot easier.

I just got my S3 also, but I was very impressed right off the bat. I went from two Olympus P&S, but I had no problem with the transition with the operation and controls. I just took the time to read the manuals and play around with my camera for two weeks.

This thread was particularly helpful: http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10364

Try reading through this online manual: http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/pss3is/components-e.html

I've had my S3 for about 3 weeks now, and everyday after work, I play around with it and learn more and more

Well my problem was i had no camera basic knowledge. I didnt know what ISO was or what the Fstops were and any of that. There is alot of technical tersm in the book that is just hard to fallow. I just kept reading around on forums asking questions and then using what they said along with the manual. Those 2 together and having the cameras i finaly figured it out.

That's funny Because from reading all your post, I've come to know you as the man with the knowledge. For years, I've only been a P&S camera guy. I went from my first two 35mm P&S cameras, to three Advantix cameras, to my first two digital cameras, and now my first digital camera with manual controls

    Red face

Thanks for help and links folks, I will be checking them soon.

RTFM is helping. Still having issues with noise and a few settings (macro doesnt work at all)..

I'm learning lots... i thought the Av and Tv modes would produce better results, though :-/

Macro.... Macro will not enable if you are zoomed in very much, and I think you need to be NOT in auto mode. Zoom to full wide, P mode, then try macro. You can then zoom in a bit.

If the neck strap has given you this much trouble, then perhaps you should stick to childrens disposable cameras

It appears to me that the S3 is simply too advanced for your (limited) knowledge of cameras.

I'm not a moron. And the neck strap was in 5 pieces when I got it. There really isnt a "how to" set it up that is helpful, either.

There is no need to treat people as if they are morons. I am here for help, not to be treated with disrespect. I'm a n00b to non-point-and-shoot cameras, but that doesnt make me a goddam retard nor does it give you the right to be a jerk. If I want a shutterbug know-it-all asshat that sticks their nose up at beginners, I will be sure to contact you specifically in the future.

I wasnt zoomed in at all, actually. I got it to work after I switched the dial out of the auto setting, doh! Thanks though.
