    Sony Alpha A100

You all probably read several previews by now, so what are your thoughts?

Personally from a cost perspective, I can see why Sony choose to do what they did but even the newly annouced alpha lenses...all KM rebaged.

I think if they get it right (unlike their Clie's, the original Mavica), they might be able to do well... being the only company other than Canon to manufacture their own sensors *and* bodies. But only time will tell.

Geez, I would expect new SONY A100 developments to be found in the SONY Digital SLRs section. Its justifyable to see this in the general dSLR's thread but looking at the big picture, we aren't doing members, and especially newcomers a favour when it comes to joining the forums and asking questions about digital cameras. All the forum activity is concentrated into the top General Section and the Canon Digital and Digital SLR Camera Sections. People see the lack of response in the manufacter sections further down the alphabet and are less inclined to post/ask there. Perhaps it even snuffs out potential digital camera choices because they see everyone praising Canon cameras like the S2/S3.

Basically, people are going end up develop a strong bias towards Canon because they see everyone else with going there and go on to drop some of the choices they originally had in mind.

Should try to honour all the other brands too.

I've been visiting this site a long time, just registered for the forums

As someone who doesn't have an investment already in lenses and is thinking about getting a digital SLR for the first time, up until now I've been pretty torn between either the Rebel XT, the 20d or the d70s.

looking at the specs/price of the Sony Alpha compared to those 3, I'm very seriously considering going with this instead. I don't really care so much about the difference in megapixels (thanks to the informative posts I found here on the subject dispelling my preconceptions about how much of a difference it makes ) ... but the built-in image stabilization, the anti-dust features, the eye sensor AF system and the improved manual control knobs from the KMs make this a very compelling argument to someone who's just starting out and will likely only buy 1 or 2 lenses in my first couple of years.

    A100

I'm just surprised Sony is releasing their initial offering on the former 5D body/platform as opposed to the 7D. Some have suggested this is to "bait" new users on a less expensive body first and then slowly build them up with accessories, lenses, and ultimately better bodies in the future. What do you guys think?

    A200... A500... B100?

Looking at Canon's Naming methodology offers no clue... it's completely backwards and weird!

    eos 300D
    eos 350D
    eos 10D
    eos 20D
    eos 30D
    eos 5D
    eos 1D
    eos-3
    eos-1

But yeah... I was kind of curious as to what happened for the planned "KM-9D" which never saw production. Could this be the real "Ace-in-the-hole" for SONY? The Canon "Full Sensor"-buster?

Only the Shadow knows, I surmise... muahahahahaha

Looks like you have to use the main coloud LCD to read the settings. Talk about unnecessary power consumption. I'm waiting for the model that I can hook my PSP to it so that in b/t shots I can play my favourite Sonic.

There are solid, well-defined reasons why Canon is popular, and in the DSLR world, in some respects superior. To discount that is to live in a fantasy world...
