Awwww crap. I lost an image from my 35L among all of the 17-55 shots. Can't remember which one it was. Maybe you can tell?

    Jamison, you seriously suck!!

With all the 'hey gee, I have a new 1200$ lens, lets hang out of this window and take a bland crooked badly exposed shot of a tree and half a car and a roof in the shade'-photos I had reason to start to dislike and doubt the EF_S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM.

But noooo... you can't leave it at that. You have to actually get the lens... and actually make some photos... that actually show what a nice little gem this lens is! And now I want one!

    Thanks !!!

BTW... really nice photos of your son and wife!! And I do not know why/how... but this lens does wonders with your son's eyes. This lens may lack a bit of "L" colour (I said may), but it sure has great contrast!

Amazing lens, but wife would bludgeon me with the nearest heavy object if I even thought about spending that much on a lens.

Sweet Dude. I don't know who was more anxious me or you? I know this lens, if performance is up to snuff, is going to rock your weddings!

Very nice sample images - This is what the lens was made for if you ask me - all those outdoor bright sunny DEEP DOF shots we've seen so far - ridiculous - Finally, and I knew it would happen, Jamie gets his hands on this baby and uses it as intended - low light, hand held, POW!

To be honest Jamie I can't guess which is the 35 L. #2 if you're taking bets.

And the little tike on the right.

So how do we like the build/weight/AF in low light? ? ?

Sweet tests so far. . . If it rivals the 35L, I'd assume it rivals the 50 1.4 & 24L perhaps - all of these and its in a 17-55 zoom + IS - I guess maybe the price is starting to make more sense. . . Thank you sir!

To answer Parm and Tim-may, RE: build quality, weight, AF.

Build quality is solid - a bit like a heavy 17-85. Heavier than my 17-40, but a touch more plasticky (mostly noticable around the filter ring).

I guess that answers the weight question too - take a look at a picture of it, imagine it's in your hands, then add 1/3 more weight. I was surprised at the weight!

Zoom ring is tighter than my "L"s, but let's see how everything loosens up after a couple of jobs.

Same with AF - initial impression is that it's not quite as zippy as the L's, and I haven't tested it in a low light environment yet, so let's wait and see on that one...

    What about color?

Seems pretty punchy to me, but I want to test it again in contrasty light.

BTW - that last shot was at 55mm (88mm equiv), 1/10 SS. IS works.

Looking good so far. . .

There have been a couple of people over at POTN that have first stated how great the lens seems to be and then go on to say something along the lines of, "Oh crap wait a minute, maybe this isn't so great. . . " I hope that isn't the case with your findings.

Color and sharpness appear to be very nice to my eyes - What is your WB method?
