Looking for almost no shutter lag

I am not pleased with the shutter lag on my Nikon Coolpix 8700, and have tried a variety tricks to improve it. I would like a recommendation for a new camera that will have excellent image quality (don't necessarily need the 8x optical zoon of the 8700) and almost no shutter lag as most of my pictures are of children who don't hold a pose for long!

    Budget: under $400
    Size: Somewhat compact
    Features:
5-6 MP, 4X optical zoom will probably suffice
Image quality should be a 10
    Do not need manual controls
    General Usage: Pictures of children
Prints will not be larger than 8x10
    Many indoor photos
    Some sports/action photos

    Thank you!

A lot of cameras have gotten quite a bit faster over the years. Try for instance a canon Powershot A610/A620. They have the specs you are looking for and I believe they are quite fast in focussing, reducing shutter lag. A trip to a shop that carries them will clear up fast enough if they are fast enough for you.
    Canon EOS 350D, Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 macro, Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC EX, Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM, Tokina AT-X124 Pro 12-24mm F4, Soligor 1.7x C/D4 DG Teleconvertor, Manfrotto 724B tripod, Canon Powershot S30

The panasonic FZ-7 in high speed focus mode should focus quite quick, the FZ-5 did.

The accuracy goes down as focus speed improves though but its not bad.
