    I'm done

Ok. It's final. I'm going for the 28-105. Just help me hope Canon comes through with one for my store soon.

I've been going over pictures, reviews, user reviews at fredmiranda etc etc. I want to be sure about this lens, and other alternatives just didn't cut it. They're either overpriced, have too many reports of problems or both. This lens appears to be a very solid performer and very good value for money. I just can't find an alternative that will do for the budget I have so this will be it.
I'll live with the not-so-wideness of this one, when I think back about my photography, wide is not my style really, or at least does not cover a lot of photography I'm interested in. If I do miss it for certain things I'll pick up the kit lens secondhand.

I hope it will come soon . I too may but that EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM II lens. Not totally sure yet though... also considering the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS USM. Or even the 24-105 f4 L IS USM.

But for now my Sigma 18-50 f2.8 covers that range mostly, so I have time to think on it. So i bought my 12-24mm Tokina first.

I think that with the 28-105 and 70-300 IS you have a very nice set of lenses... and if you do want to go wider later, there are plenty of options.

That's my choice too. I should have bought one last week but things didn't go as planned and I never got time to visit the shop... Hopefully, this week I will be succesful, just in time for Easter.

Seems like the local shops don't have the 28-105 in stock, but one shop has a used copy. I'm interested.

Anything specific I should look out for when checking it? I know the obvious about looking for damage, and I will get the chance to try it on my 350D. It will also come with a 12 month warranty...

Funnily enough, they also have a used 28-135 IS...which I might try...

Well I think the biggest difference between a good and a bad copy would be sharpness. From what I've read the 28-135 shouldn't be much sharper (maybe even softer) than the 105, so if you have any chance to compare at 100%....

Just be sure it is the right 28-105 (starting at f3.5.. not the cheaper version).

Thanks...I do know about the different models at f3.5-4.5 and f4-5.6. Former is good, latter is much less good. Luckily it's sunny too so I should be able to get some good test shots!

    -----

Well, I've bought it. The test shots I tried didn't seem too bad but it's hard trying to judge from a small screen. Loading them into the computer they seemed reasonable but the location wasn't the most suitable..it became quite overcast too. I shall endeavour to take a few later today and post a couple here.

It does feel a bit heavier and more solid than the kit lens, and it came with a lens hood...which was nice.
