    So You've Bought a New Lens......My Tamron 24-135 Review

Hello all. New to the world of digital photography and photography in general.
I just purchased a used Tamron 24-135mm f3.5-5.6 for my Rebel XT from KEH.
Main reason for the upgrade from the kit lens was for imroved image quality.
The Tamron got strong reviews on this site as well as f.miranda

I did my own crude lens comparison with the Tamron and the Canon 18-55 "kit lens".

I've drawn a few conclusions, but would like to hear from some of you about the results. Also might help those of you looking at the Tamron.
    Thanks!

I think a better lense would have been the sigma 18-125, the range is greater and overall it is a great quality lens (for the money). The Tamron doesn't look very good wide open (the kit lens beats it) stoped down slightly it looks much better.

If I was in the market to spend between 3 and 4 hundred bucks for a lens, I'd compromise on the reach and maximize on the quality via a Sigma 24-70 or Tamron 28-75. Faster and sharper. Pretty much the same price.
    Ouch.

At 28mm, below f/8, I think the Tamron makes the kit lens look good! At 50mm, they look pretty close, except for some obvious CA with the kit lens at f/5.6...

Not such an image quality upgrade from where I stand...

Hey, that page looks familiar !

That Tamron's definitely unusably soft at 28mm f4 (unless you want a nice soft focus portrait), and really never gets much better than the kit lens. I'm a little puzzled as to why the kit lens gets a bit softer at f8. It should really only get sharper. Could your focus have been bumped?

At 50mm the Tamron's a bit better, but still not any better than the kit. I also think the kit has a bit more "punch" with the Tamron's images looking a little flatter. Can you return it? A better option might be the Canon 28-105 f3.5-4.5 USM (which stood up pretty well against the L's in this test: http://www.bigredstudios.com/35.htm)

The bigger surprise to me is how soft the Tokina is at f4. Everyone who I've heard talk about that lens crows about how sharp it is...

Sorry man, I know how disappointing it is when a new toy doesn't live up to expectations!

Ha! Thank you, Jamison. Hopefully you share the view that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Thanks for the "template" and your comments.
Thanks to everyone else who responded as well.
I can and will return the Tamron. KEH has a 14 day no questions return policy.
Not noticibly better than the kit lens and much worse wide open.
I had looked at the Tamron 28-75 for a similar price, but wanted the additional lower reach especially.
I'll take a look at some of the above recommended lenses. I did a search, but couldn't find a thread mentioning some of the different places to purchase a used lens. KEH, f.miranda, ebay, any other recommendations? thanks
And yes, disappointed in the Tokina. It's been to the factory and recalibrated, but still not quite what I expected.

used 3rd party lenses - you never know if they're being sold because they are duds unless you see test samples. canon 28-105 USM sounds like a good suggestion. did i mention how unreliable i find 3rd party lens AF to be?
