Post S2IS-Brief Review//specially for RFD folks who picked this up $500CAD all in

Well-I just had to go and create my own thread.

I bought the S1 Jan '05, and a couple weeks later heard about the S2. Man was I pissed.

Anyway, Just last Thursday a bunch of us lucked out BIG-TIME, and picked it up for a very impressively cheap price (thanks for pms & online coupons & a few other tricks up our sleeves).

So far-coming from the S1 here's the scoop.

    1. Weight-surprisingly similar
    2. relocation of the microphone from rear-ward to FRONT-ward
    3. better placement of the diagram for the battery insertion orientation
    4. removal of the IS hot button --> menu accessible (kinda like it)
    5. MUCH BETTER FOCUSING...still a bit off, but Good Lord a God Send!
    6. EDIT: SUPER MACRO AND MACRO....MODES ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
    7. zoom motor is AUDIBLE in the S2...I'll have to test it in crowds, not especially quiet circumstances, but pretty sure you can hear it well enough to drive you nutz forever.
    8. improved swivel zoom button, outer extremes for quick zoom-remainder for normal speed zoom
    9. I dig the recessed buttons: func/jump/display/record etc
    10. of course who can't like the non-slip grip + enlarged (for those of us with big hands
    11. Thank you Canon for attempting to accomodate a macro..even though it's among the lower end of the averages in quality.
    12. where's the remote enable on the action/timer button that got moved around? (I'm feeling that there's no remote support
    13. AND WHAT IS THAT WEIRD new option (My Colours-new Canon Gimmick) in the rotary dial? before stitch/panorama?????

So can you really hear the zoom motor?
    You tell me:
    ONE
TWO HEHE....ahh brothers., can't do a video test with them around., can't get anything else done around the house without them.
    THREE

Okay here're some pics., pls give constructive...okay, destructive welcome also., criticism.

EDIT: I wasn't aware of the manual mode available only SUPER MACRO MODE for the following comments-God Bless /cat/ for setting me on the straight path and bringing me away from the Land of normal Macro hehe
Uhhhh YUCK., CALCULUS.....With my brothers Konica Minolta Z5-I can take a fullscreen pic of an sd card. So Imagine only SIX of the buttons in the whole screen...that's what I mean by mediocre MACRO

focused VERY WELL., pretty dark room S1 would've died trying to hit anything there.

hehe got lost in his useless game he worships.

Couple of blah pics that I took just to see how well it focuses in crap light settings...so far so gewwwwwwwwwwd.

Though I started fiddling more with adjusting the flash strength-seemingly well enough., I can't help but think that these didn't come out WASHED OUT as close ups usually do because the flash in fact is weaker than the S1's

    Who's YOUR (hehe., I mean "a") Daddy

And in case the rep who convinced you to buy this didn't explain., this is what IS (Image stabilization) does for your jittery hands and basically any-but usually mainly the extreme close-ups., or zoooooom ups.

re the macro mode - are you depressing the button twice in order to get the supermacro? just I wouldn't have called it mediocre...? I don't know anything about the S1 so may be the same but I know a lot of people were confused by the manuals instructions on how to use this - the manual is wrong!

No. I think I did it once and nothing happened, so I just click it ONCE.
EDIT: I just tried again., because I was seriously doubting I would've missed a double click to enable super macro. There is none budz. firmware upgrade?

    Macro is mediocre.

This is a macro pic of an SD card with my brothers Konica Minolta Z5. focal playing field 0cm !!!!!!!

Now that's impressive! one of the DUMMY FREE-FOR-ALL., computers at work....uhhhhhhh., shudder to accept that it DOES reside in my building

As a follow-up., the Z5, has dual macro modes., basic (engaged by clicking macro once), SUPER (clicking macro a 2nd time). The S2 didn't have anything like this...did it?

Did anyone figure out if you can still get a remote to work with this thing??? THERE'S NO IR PORT!!!!

def two macro modes - first will show a tulip shape, second will stick a big S in the tulip shape.. you get to it either by pressing the macro button twice or just holding it down a few secs does it for me. One thing I did neglect to say - only works in P, Tv Av and M modes Trust me its excellent, really good review of this camera here http://www.steves-digicams.com/2005_reviews/s2is.html which also gave the macro mode a thumbs up Hope this helps.

    tripod

    hi bubble.tea ,

great video and now i understand what the macro mode is usppose to do. a picture is really worth a 1,000 words.

i saw your camera on a tripod. i haven't purchased the camera yet because i'm trying to decide if i should wait to see what new models are coming out over the next few months.

i do want to purchase a tripod, actually 2, a full size one and a desktop one, so i'm wondering which model tripod you have.

i have a full size tripod for my camcorder - a velbon videomate 607. i don't know if i can use it for the camcorder also. if so, i guess i could buy one of those clamps and leave it on the bottom of the camera like i do the camcorder.

any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    thank you
    indera
