Smile My Son's first 'Annual Day' Function....

See how time changes... At my time, I first got admitted to school (nursery class) after I had turned four. And now, my son at 2yr 8months has already completed 1 year at school

They were celebrating their Annual Day and I went well prepared with my 400D + 18-50 Sigma + 24-105 + 430Ex. However, the moment I reached the Auditorium, i realized I has made a big mistake... i has forgotten to bring my charged and ready set of Enelopes for the flash. I rushed out and the best i could get was 2 sets of Duracell alkakies.

Due to my popularity as the parent with the 'big' camera in school, I managed to get a seat in the 1st row which was normally reserved for special guests, However, even from here, the stage was around 30' away... so i had to use the 28-105 for most of the pics. Also the ceiling was very very high.. around 30-40' and dark colored... so bouncing the flash was out of question. I used direct flash in all the photos. Also the various colorful disco lights were causing strange color casts on the stage and in some of the photos. Moreover, the entire stage background was black in colour, so the camera was over exposing to turn that expanse on black into grey. To reduce this tendency, i shot in Partial metering and the final fine tuning was completed with FEC.

I mostly shot at ISO 400, 1/100 to 1/160 depending on the speed of the performance and wide open between f/4 - f/4.5.

This is how they turned out..

    C&C Appreciated...& Thanks for looking

some great memories there viky. love the costumes and the colour. if i can suggest...if you shoot at 1/160s with flash you probably need to bump up to iso 800 or maybe even another 3rd of a stop to 1000/1250. that will give you a fair bit more light in the background so it isn't so dark.

very cute kids. you should be proud.

Thanks Rooz! yes these will be great memories, even for the kid when he grows up!

Regarding your suggestion of ISO 800, yes that's right it will provide more ambient light to brighten the background. will keep in mind
