What would you do if you started fresh?

This is an interesting exercise/game to try out. Assume for a moment that all your gear vanished and that you had to start over from scratch. You now have $2000 total to spend including the body.

    Please read these terms!
    - Assume that no rebates exist and that all prices are "fair" give or take a little.
    - Assume that accessories (except for flashes) aren't included in this price, so no need to factor in the memory card or carrying bags.
    - Assume that you can't buy used or discontinued products.
    - Assume that you cannot add to the kit in the future. This is the whole point of the exercise.
    - Use the following prices for DSLR bodies.

    20D - $1250 / 350D - $750
    D50 - $600 / D70S - $850 / D200 - $1700
    *st DS - $600
    KM 5D - $650 / KM 7D - $800
    E300 - $600 / E500 - $700

What would you get with $2000 and why?
Now, if you had $3000 to spend, how would your selection change?

    --------------------------------------------------------------

    $2000
    - If I had $2000 to spend, I would opt for a 350D instead of a 20D and grab a 17-40L and a 70-200 f/4 L.
$3000 - If I had $3000 to spend, I would change the 70-200 over to the IS version.

This exercise might seem a bit silly at first, but you might notice a tendency to minimize on the body and maximize on the glass. At least, that was the case for me. In reality, I would be going for the 20D, but if I were forced into a situation where I could only spend X dollars and couldn't upgrade, I would make the most of the lenses. It's a bit farfetched of a situation, but it's a little something to remember while we're all caught up with waiting for the latest and greatest bodies (i.e. 20D's successor).

XT body, 24-70 f/2.8L totalling $1889 then save a few bucks to add $200 for a Sigma EF-500 DG Super....total would be about $2089. Kinda tough to stay under 2 grand these days.

With 3 grand, I'd add the grip, extra battery, spare CF card, & Lightsphere + Sto-Fen. Basically I'd work my way back up to what I have now.
    Ouch.

    ALL my gear?

in the 2G range, i wouldn't know what to do yet. i would have to resort to lower cost lenses - there are just too many choices there and i wouldn't have the time to take a proper look and give a meaningful opinion.

    for 3G:

    350D
    17-40
    70-200 f4
    50mm f1.8
    kenko extension tubes
    sigma 500 super flash

Edit: i editted the remaining stuff out cuz looking back, i don't know what the heck i was rambling about.
obviously new products have come out, my list would change a bit, and i'd have something for the 2k budget, but i'll just leave it at that

I know that this isn't what you mean, but how can you not go for the Canon 5D for $650. For 2K, you still have $1350 to get some lenses, cards, flash..., and for 3K you might even go for a second body. Whether you are a Canon or Nikon fan, this is by far the best deal listed. Even if you did mean the Maxxum 5D.

Why isn't the D200 in this theoretical exercise?

edit: never mind about the D200, I see it now.

Only $2000 to spend? My kit would be:

    Nikon D50 - $600
    Nikon sb600 - $185
    Nikon 17-55 f2.8DX - $1200
    Total: $1985

    $3000? Now you're talking!

    Nikon D50 - $600
    Nikon sb600 - $185
    Nikon 17-55 f2.8DX - $1200
    Nikon 50 f1.8 - $100
    Sigma 70-200 f2.8 - $840
Total: $2925 (with $75 left over for a nice bag to carry it all in!)

    Surprised?

    D200

I've already voted with my dollars. D200 + 50mm f/1.8. OK, I'm getting the 18-200 also, but that doesn't fit in the $2000 requirement, so that's the $3000 added item.

Hmmm, hard to choose for 2k now that Canon introduced the delicious EF 24-105 f4 L.

    I might just choose the
    Canon EOS 350D with that
    Canon EF 24-104 f4 L IS USM, and a
50mm Sigma f2.8 EX macro ( I can't do without a good macro lens) and
    B&W polarizer for the 24-105 f4 L.

    For 3k, hmm... The
Canon EOS 350D, I would change the 50mm Sigma for the
Tamron SP 90mm F2.8 Di macro, and get the
Canon EF 70-200 f4 L USM, and the
    Tokina AT-X Pro 124 12-24 f4.
Canon EF 24-105 f4 L IS USM with
B&W polarizer (both the 12-24 and the 24-105 have 77mm filtersize), and a
Canon 50mm f1.8 for low light situations.
    Canon EOS 350D, Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 macro, Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC EX, Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM, Tokina AT-X124 Pro 12-24mm F4, Soligor 1.7x C/D4 DG Teleconvertor, Manfrotto 724B tripod, Canon Powershot S30

Canon 5D plus Tamron 17-35, 28-75 and Sigma 70-200. Then I'd look at some 300 and 500 primes
