I have actually been facing the same question recently. I am in need of a fast, sharp lense with good contrast and color and have been contemplating the Canon 24-70L f/2.8 (~$1200). The problem is, all my research has shown me that in actuality there are cheaper lenses that perform just as well as the Canon such as the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX DG Macro or the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. All the reviews I have read have shown that the difference is very minimal in comparison. I did however notice that in all your shots the L lense shows a significant difference in contrast and color. The highlights on the can with the 28-105 seem blown out, whereas the same picture with the 24-70L seems more properly exposed and overall more realistic. But then again, is this added color worth spending 10x as much? I guess my decision will be made when I go to the camera store to try them all out for myself.
