I believe that there are indeed a few exceptions within the point and shoot category that do produce some very good photos. A great deal of change is happening in the point and shoot field right now. Certainly the Fuji F-10 is a point and shoot digital camera with "...excellent..." photo quality as noted by our own Jeff Keller in his review of the Fuji F-10.
In the same review he also compared the output of the F-10 to that of the Nikon D-70, it might be worth a look. With a less than $(US) 300 price it has its faults but the positives far outweigh the negatives.
Another digital camera that might deserve a look is the Olympus Stylus 800 that has just come out, but has not been reviewed as yet.
Here is a Fuji F-10 sample photo for you. I am going to have to get busy and come up with some more Fuji F-10 sample photos, but this is one of my favorites.

Probably, you make a living in the field of photography or related area. Your photos are beautiful. Because of your photos, I find your support for this P&S credible.
The important question here is how much that has to do with your skills with this camera and how much that has to do with Fuji F-10. My guess 70%-your skills, 30%-Fuji F10.
Of course you are 110% correct. Naturally,I do draw on my 50+ years of photographic experience everytime I take a photo with the Fuji F-10. But the key issue here is simply this: My desire is to show you exactly what you can do with the Fuji F-10. In fact, MindRules the digital photo quality from the Fuji F-10 is so good that I freely intersperse the F-10 photos with my dSLR digital photos when I offer them for sale.
Beacuse I am indeed here on this Forum multiple times everyday, sometime as many as 6 to 8 times everyday, you do indeed have an opportunity to learn how to take the very same kind of digital photos. It all has to do with how much you want to learn. I always describe exactly what I have done and how I did it, so that you can do the very same thing, if you so desire.
Yes, I have indeed written three best selling digital camera books, but this is Jeff Keller's website, not mine. It would not be ethical for me to flog my books without his specific permission. And i believe in being ethical.
Here is another F-10 photo sample for you. Just keep in mind that this is indeed something that you can do yourself.
