My friend's little sister was celebrating her 16 birthday and there was a bar, so I decided to take a shot [pun intended].

Save your money and get a Nikon D50 or a Pentex K100D. They aren't going to kill your budget, but keep in mind once you dive in, you'll be tempted to buy more gear to compliment your system. :D
