I'd stay away from the old 24-120VR as it's a terrible lens. Have a look around for reviews and you'll see it's rated very poorly. The new 24-120 f4VR is a much better lens but not exactly cheap.

2 years doesn't sound normal, pretty short actually. Mine's just over 5 years old and I use it a lot. I'd just get a SB700/900 rather than repairing it as I need the 360 swivel. I actually broke...
-
I think it focuses too slow, it's the slowest of all my lenses and I don't have any fast pro lenses to compare it to either.
-
Thanks for all the help. If it's still having the same problem after the next charge I'll be getting a couple new ones. Looks like grey market it is, almost half the price of retail.
-
Do you all use the EN-EL3e battery? I'll try the charging method you suggested K1W1, but if it doesn't work I'll have to buy some new batteries. It's a choice between the EN-EL3e battery or EN-EL4a...

Since I got my D700 in August 2009 I noticed I wasn't getting as many shots per charge as when I was using the EN-EL3e in my previous D70s. I figured that the D700 was more power hungry due to the...

ECS have it for $465. http://www.cameras.net.au/product_info.php?cPath=31&products_id=339

It's a fantastic lens. My previous macro lens was the nikon AF-D 60mm f/2.8 and the autofocus was very slow on that and hunted a fair bit. The 105VR is far better. In very close focus distances it...

Any mates nearby with the same quick release plate you could try? Does SSIL have the same tripod head? It might be worth a try to go into a shop to try out another copy of the same quick release...
-
I've got the ballhead 486RC2 and I believe it has the same quick release plate. I've never had a problem of it loosening with just hand tightening. Even with a battery grip it doesn't budge in...

Taken at Maroondah Reservoir. It's just about at capacity which is a good thing if you live in Victoria.

The sun looks like it's passing through some tree branches and is casting a slight shadow over her torso, so her legs are slightly brighter.

This is not going to end well for my bank balance. You were the influence behind me buying the 105VR and 50f1.4G. I've been eyeing the 24-120 since its release. Give us a quick review if you have...
-
I guess if you already have the software then the quicker method would be the one to choose. Is George Tindale garden and William Ricketts sanctuary free also or do they still charge? I know that...
-
Which garden in Mt Dandenong is that? I haven't been to that one before. Nice pano, so will you be sticking to ICE or LR for panos?
-
K1W1 mention earlier that changing the picture controls makes no difference if you're shooting RAW, it only makes a difference if you're shooting jpeg so don't worry too much about changing the...

Thought you'd be a bit annoyed that they didn't put VR in the 85mm. I'm very happy about the 24-120 f/4 VR. I don't really get the 55-300 DX, is it a replacement for the 55-200VR. If it's the same...
-
How much are they asking. Just thought I'd let you know the 60mm macro is a very good lens with great image quality but very slow autofocus as I used to have one. Fast AF isn't so much an issue on...
-
Having used a 50mm on both a DX and FX body I feel it's much more versatile as a true 50mm. If I were in your position I'd choose the 35mm f/1.8 as it'll still be good for those close in portraits...

I don't know if strobist will tell you exactly which contacts to tape down, however this is the article I was referring to. The amount above the sync speed does depend on your camera also.
...
-
That is correct. If you do a search on strobist you'll be able to find what I'm talking about. Obviously there is a limit to how fast you can go, and it all depends on what flash power you're...
-
If you're using the external flash on camera, the only way to do it is to use something like tape to cover the contacts that deal with TTL flash information so it can't communicate with the camera to...
-
I'm guessing you're the Richard that Neil Van Niekerk mentioned in his blog. How was the shoot with Frank Doorhof and Neil? Great shots there.
-
I'd consider getting the old Nikon flashes with built in slaves. The SB-26 and SB-80DX both have built in slaves which would mean not needing the radio triggers until you can afford them to make...

I'll happily take all the profoto gear. I guess it's only me and K1W1 in melbourne. I'm sure if they dress up with some helmets and knee pads K1W1 won't have any dramas.
