Had a long chat with the Nikon service engineer this morning he is almost certain it is a problem with the DC-DC power board, he estimates that he sees approx 5-6 D70's a week with this same problem...
Did Nikon ever let you know just exactly what the problem was as my D70 has gone exactly the same way :(
