Sunsets!

Thanks Prospero I wish I'd done something to deserve your praise, I'm afraid they were all straight out of the camera and taken on sunrise/sunset mode. In fact I took a few shots to start with & must have been having a senior moment or something & just couldn't get anything sensible, they were all far too blue. I tried changing iso, exposure comp, metering etc but just couldn't get anything with less blue so I resorted to the Olympus sunrise mode before the moment passed completely.

It wasn't until I looked at the exif on the PC that I spotted I'd left it on Tunsgten WB :o
Maybe this is a case when shooting raw would have saved the earlier shots. There was originally a blackbird sitting in the tree that I wanted to include with the sunset background but he got fed up & flew off before I got my act together.

Your shot on the other hand shows off your skills - very nicely done.

This was definitly a shot that you could have saved by shooting in RAW. In just a few clicks, you would beable to turn the blue colours to the warm colours like in the pictures you posted.
Having said that, the fact that they are straight out of the camera and taken in sunset mode doesn't make the pictures any worse. The composition is quite nice (especially the second) and being being there at the right time is often much more important than getting the technicalities right.

Here's a shot from my wintersports vacation. It's not really a sunset, but a sunrise:

The Alps are really one of my favourite places in the world. I always hate coming back to Holland to find that the whole landscape is flat again :)

How can I reduce the flare around the sun on a shot like this without going darker?

Eddie - those ar very nice Sunrises - I think I like the composition of the first one the best - that dusky misty landscape under that sky does it for me

I agree with Geoff Eddie those misty sunrises are lovely. I've been trying to get misty morning shots like that for ages but time & place just never seem to correspond for me, maybe one day. I like number one but also like the pano aspect of no3. I tried cropping number 1 into pano not quite so much as you did so it left some of the frost area. When viewed in the screenshow mode of windows picture & fax viewer it puts a large black border around it & the shot looks fantastic. I haven't worked out how to add borders to posts yet (just one of the many simple things I guess I haven't worked out yet) so couldn't post it back, but believe me a large black border shows that scene of wonderfully.

I sometimes wonder if I've learnt anything more than taking leading line photos.

I had trouble judging how long to make the exposure for the right amount of fluffy water look. Sometimes I think I have too much of it sometimes not enough.

What was the SS on this one? I don't see any foreground waves so you'd probably have to stretch the exposure out quite a bit for "fluffy".

I't not so much the shutter speed that bothers me it's making the decision of how much water blur I desire.

In this shot it was 8 seconds but only 1 foot lapping waves.

~ enjoyable set though - It's good to see it in comparitive daylight at the start - albeit dusky blue (nice) I liked the last one- the colours are deap and blue and make a nice almost, or getting towards, silhoette - but the water is still quite visible - so it's a bit brighter than silhouette (HDR again or not??)

Nope matrix metering, the camera did all the work again.

I'll confess I added some colour control points under the jetty and selectively lightened there.

That first one is excellent... the second one was a difficult exposure to say the least.

And then I turned around to find Mister Moon rising. It was in the upper 40's when the sun was up, but fell rapidly while setting, into the low 30's. My hands were freezing, and you can see by the halo around the moon, the air was getting thick and damp....it chills you to the bone :eek:

I liked eddies 2 & 4 best DPR It's good that we are all different. Like that set of beach huts too Craig, very striking composition. Hey is that a Crane with wings flying over head SpecialK.

Me too but in terms of C&C I'd prefer more contrast and sharper on the trees on the background headland.
