As often is the case, it just happened. The sun was just right for defining detail of feathers. I had been shooting these fellows for 3 or 4 weeks. Using Flash, not using Flash. But I'm going to quit on this one - at least until next year:)

Gee drama I hope that bird looks better in color. It looks like the victim of an oil spill.
The bird is black & white, the background was rather dull, so I converted it to B&W
The oil spill look as you call it, is the feather detail which is visible on side lighting
If you are saying black & shiny is oil spilly, cant argue with that :D

Hi drama. Being in eastern Canada I dont have a picture of a Fan tailed fly catcher in any of my books. My comment was more about the birds appearance than your photo skills. Strange looking bird.
That is a pretty good representation of the bird :)
I love them for a particular reason, they set in groups in the evenings & go after mosquitoes :D
