Most of our cicada types don't come out here until summer, which means mid-July.

Wow, Erik, that's really gross ... er, good. ;) I don't think we have cicadas here, and now I'm glad. How big are they? Great shots.
They are roughly 3 inches long...and great subjects for shooting as they dont move too much! Those are the first pictures I took with my camera.
THREE INCHES???? :eek: Ewwwww! That makes it even worse. I'm so glad we don't have them here ... amazing work for your first shots.
On a hike, I saw this tent of western tent caterpillars:

The caterpillars chewed their heads out of the tent and then flung their bodies around like crazy trying to fall off the tent. Then they would book it to the shade, where they soon make cocoons and turn into moths.
