Just so The kids are not completely disillusioned. There was a real full size boat used for most of the King Kong scenes. The one you saw is the model that was used in the CGI scenes. The real boat was parked at Miramar wharf in Wellington near Weta studios for several years after the movie was made. I asked my brothers what had happened to it while I was there last year and they said that they thought it had been taken out to sea and sunk.
We all had a nice time and relaxed a bit today, we only made it as far as San Simeon. We've now seen Hearst Castle which I'll confess to feeling is a monument to having too much money and not enough sense. I liked the subtle digs in the exhibits that he indulged himself at the expense of his creditors.
After Hearst we tried a couple ocean viewing stops on the off chance we might see some elephant seals. Long story short we saw a family? of sea otters and 2 separate colonies of seals (or the same colony over 2 beaches).
Correspondingly I have lots of photos to process but little time in which to do it because I've just invested a couple hours re-reading everyone's advice in this thread to be sure I take the best advantage of it.

So Big Sur and Monterey area tomorrow en route to SFO?
You'll kill me for this but we got to San Fran tonight. I know we drove through some magnificent country quickly but we got to see as much as we desired today and had fun. I didn't drive into Monterey or go to Cannery Row, sorry. If it's any consolation the bit of the harbour and cannery we did see looked a lot like Port Lincoln back home (well 6 hrs drive from my home but you get the idea).
It was really really foggy all day but that made the drive past the pretty cliffs interesting in a different sort of way. Truthfully we couldn't see the cliffs but the fog made it all mystical and kept the cliff drive from looking the windy Great Ocean Rd in Victoria (but with a much higher quality road). I think the fog kept down the traffic and made it all navigable even with the road down to 1 lane as you had warned me. It gave me some much needed practice driving on the right side of the road too. San Fran got hectic as the lanes appear to be appreciably tighter than we'd encountered elsewhere.
We saw a small colony of Harbour Seals at Point Lomos but missed the big trees much to my sorrow. The kids just wouldn't wear an extra detour and were being so wonderful I had to humour them.
I'm finding everyone we meet very friendly, helpfull and tolerant of my idiosyncrasies. I cheekily asked an attractive local gal if I could grab a happy snap of her where she was sitting in a creek (photo below). The photo hardly does her justice, he teenage son was thrilled that his mom got asked for her photo :)
Plenty of other happy snaps from me below, it is 2 days worth though.
Dinner tonight in a great little Chinese place in San Fran where we caught up on all the vegetables we'd been missing. While dining I was tempted to ask where they imported their veggies from as I hadn't seen them before in the states. :) joking
We're staying in a dodgy little hotel that unfortunately reminds me of scenes from Dexter.
I've just booked Yosemite hotels so we're now committed to only 2 days in San Fran before moving on.
Edit for some reason I can't upload photo's, I'll try again tomorrow.
Edit photos added May 15th when internet obliged. Plenty of wildflowers out which makes me wish I'd brought a macro lens with me. Also a photo of poison oak, a pleasant little surprise for us foreigners to be told "leaves of three let it be".
Now you've experienced summer in Monterey Bay. 30 minutes of sun... then fog. Drive 10 miles inland, 80 degrees and sunny.
Glad you made it to SFO without incident. You'll see plenty of BIG trees in Sequoia.
Sorry to miss the caravan... so guess I'll have to come to Australia one of these years.
I still can't upload images, anyone else having problems? I'm getting behind in my posting now.
We had fun in San Fran today, you can't even scratch the surface of this city in 2 days. With the benefit of hindsight I reckon I'd need 1 week to feel I'd seen anything meaningful and 2 weeks to do it justice. Oh well off to Yosemite tomorrow on this crazy whirlwind ride through the USA.
I tried for your Italian place K1W1 but just ran out of luck and time. We only just made the pre booked Alcatraz ferry by 5 mins by jumping off our tour bus and grabbing a frantic cab ride across town in peak hour. Dragging kids across lanes of traffic to jump into the cab I hailed was an experience for them as working for the Highways Dept I'm usually unbelievably safety first.
Best bits of today were Alcatraz according to my son or the bus ride across the Golden Gate it you were to ask me. We also saw a wax works and put lots of time and effort into just seeing lots of the city. It all gave us some nice variety. Wish I could post photos.

You are correct. Will not accept pics.
Jeff did a server migration yesterday I believe, perhaps it relates.
Pictures deleted now that the posting issue is resolved. This is DPRs holiday picture thread not mine.
I believe it's working for you as from memory you post links from Flickr, whereas I upload to this site via go advanced.
