Lightroom, RAW and DNG
I have some questions about Adobe Lightroom, RAW photo file format and DNG files.
First, I'll ask about software.
MY CURRENT HARDWARE
MacBook Pro (2.33 GHz, MacOS 10.6.8, 2 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD)
Will not be replacing this machine in the near-term, but it is a goal of mine.
I see Lightroom 4 is on Amazon for less than $120.
But would Lightroom run on my rig?
What cpu? I7,i5, C2D? Well anyhow, I think you'll be fine, Lightroom isn't that cpu intensive, but it may be worth getting some more ram.
MacBook Pro model 2,2
processor is a 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo
I have a desktop PC with:
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GHz, 2499 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB
That slows down a bit with Lightroom - It is the memory that is the bottle neck.
But I suggest downloading a demo and trying it - from memory I di not have a problem with the demo but I tried a beta version before release.
Does the demo version offer a means to import images from iPhoto? Can I limit the scope of my import? (My iPhoto library contains over 45,000 images)
Does the demo version offer a means to un-install it after it has expired?
No idea what iPhoto is but you can select which folders to import.
Simple enough to uninstall on a PC and I can not see why not on a mac
I have iPhoto....but I can't say that I've ever used i much. I don't think there isn't any straight forward way to import files from iPhoto into Lightroom because iPhoto stores them in a library. So you will probably wind up having to do some sort of "export as original" and then import them into Lighroom. As far as uninstalling the demo, just drag it from your applications folder to the trash.
