D600 officially OUT!

Is this my next purchase?

I'm still thinking of the D800, price in Aus D800 $2,995, D600 $2,095.

I don't want all those extra pixels but the mode dial, reduced focus points and smaller body would get on my nerves.

Thom's just raved about it though, comparing it to the D700 for hitting the mark of what people desire from a camera, unlike the D800 or D4 which missed the mark for various reasons.

The jury is still out... not sure I want to give up a new large format printer for a slight gain in DOF. Budgets being what they are on this end it looks like the D7000 will end up being the new Nikon of choice. we'll see what the future brings.

Personally I am not all that excited about Nikon's D600/D800. It's not that these aren't great cameras but just aren't fitting the bill for my needs/wants. I'd be first in line to buy a real D700 replacement- same D300/D700 style body, full frame with 16-24mb files, and great high ISO performance just like the D700 had with the D3. I'd be happy if it had D3s type low light performance and D700 fps.

Other than video and without a need for super high megapixels am I missing some benefit of replacing my D3/D300 with Nikon's new cameras? I'm eliminating the D4 due to cost and the fact I'm not shooting sports frequently these days.

At $1599 they would have had my $$. At $2099 I think not.

Those D3/D300 cameras aren't exactly slouches. I feel that D90 owners probably don't need to upgrade unless they are using their camera heavily. It is also easy and relatively cheap to find an easy video solution. What I am curious about which won't work with what I have are those WU-1a and WU-1b wireless things which don't seem to be completely compatible with every smartphone system out there.

It is the price of FX lenses that would stop me from going full-frame. I'm sure $1600 was a too-good-to-be-true hope/rumor that was just thrown out there.

I ordered an iPhone 5 today to replace an old Blackberry as my first video camera- I got off pretty cheap compared to a new DSLR;)

Rich as I understand it the high iso performance is comparable to the D700. You're not missing some benefit, it's as simple for me as owning nice FX lenses but only crop bodies, that's why I'm keen to buy one.

As with a few past cameras, from Nikon, there are a few gotchas with the D600 that bothered me. 1/4000 max SS, and 1/200 flash sync. This appears to be the D80 of FX cameras. :( I was really tempted to go ahead with the D600, but decided to move up to the D7000 instead. The old D70 has served me well, hopefully the D7000 will do likewise.

Yes, the ISO performance is the same as a D700 which is the same as what I have on my D3. I was hoping to pick up some improvement in this area in a D700 sized body but can only improve upon what I have in another pro body D3s or D4. Your images are already better than mine- I'm going to feel even worse when I see you start posting your images from a FF body ;)
