Okay ... I gave it another go, after the ornaments were added. I also added fill flash ... and backed up a bit.
Still hand-held ... but interesting.

Tonight, I went with a different approach to the lighting. I used the two cheaper, lamp type, screw-in SLAVE omni-flashes ... ceiling bounced & triggered by the HVL-F56AM flash on the α850. It's not perfect, but it is exceptionally portable and fast.
The results were that 90% of the shots, anywhere in the room, were lit well enough and fast enough to get even 1/200th of a second - ISO-200 & f/9, indoors, without direct flash. Yes, low-end lensing. ;)
