The big boy of the nikon flash lineup.
fantastic controls. adjustments are easy, intuative and fast.
excellent power and the zoom to 200mm works a treat. at short distances fully zoomed its almost snoot-like.
ability to modify the light dispertion from wide to centred and one other thing that i never use.
built very well
360deg head turning
its bloody big. and i mean freakin huge.
the overheating problem can range from the annoying to the downright "throw it in the f*cking river" frustrating.
its bloody big.
the foot is like half a mm thicker than any other nikon flash. this doesnt sound like a big deal but it IS ! cos it wont fit into any other nikon strobe stand OR some hotshoes. i had to change all my stands/ shoes when i got it. cheap to do but a real PITA.
would i buy it again ?
with the sb700 released the answer is no. the flash was worth its weight in gold with that interface but with the sb700 using the same interface only cheaper, then no..i would not buy this flash again. in fact the sb700 goes one up on useability with 2 switchs on it for directional light and for ttl/M etc. this is a superb addition.
I'd love a 14-24 to do interiors in cars, but other than that I basically have no need for it. If anyone is looking for the best glass, the best performer - the 14-24 f2.8 is it. No doubt. But I need VR more than I need fast glass, because I shoot mostly at f5.6-f11 handheld with it. That's the main thing. And I don't need corner to corner sharpness. It would be nice, but I can do without it. So the 16-35 just suits me better...mostly because of VR (my hands are a bit shakey )

So, I've been lurking for some time now. Saw this thread and thought I'd boast a little. Currently shooting a D90 with 18-200/35mm 1.8/ 50mm1.8, and sb-600. Been wanting to go full frame, so I took advantage of the Nikon rebates and ordered the D700 w/ 16-35, 24-70, and 70-200, added a sb-900 and battery grip and a couple of B+W fitlers. Can't wait for it to get here.
Welcome Pacman and congrats on the new mortgage :)
Wow, you went all-out! But since you can afford it, its nice to get those rebates while they're available.

That's just such an awesome combo. You're going to love the IQ that delivers. Congratulations.

We need to keep this thing alive! It has been almost 2 months now since the last post.
I dont have anything cool to post, but after almost switching over to a Canon :o I picked up a used D40 to play with for a while. With the camera I got this little thing which will be used whenever I go out to shoot motocross. The only thing I hate about the d40 is the three focus points. It is all the camera I would ever need besides that. Maybe a D3000 (For the more focus points, 4 extra mp and ISO down to 100) will be in my future in a year or so after a few better lenses. But we will see how this does me this upcomming summer. :)
I bought a nikkor 35mm f2, that I'm so impressed with that I can't even be bothered with taking a picture of it. I think I've been spoiled by the nice f1.4g glass, 'cause this f2 POS is just not doing it for me. Way to soft wide open. I'm getting rid of it ASAP.
