Where the confusion really is that the newer lenses (e.g., SONY DT 50mm f/1.8, SONY DT 30mm f/2.8, SONY DT 55-200mm f/4-5.6 & SONY DT 18-55mm f/4-5.6) for the A230, A330 and A380 will have the AF/MF switch on them, because they include a focus motor in the lens, no longer relying on the screw drive in the camera body.
The AF/MF selector on the other SONY camera bodies simply disengages the screw motor and allows for free adjustment of the focus ring on the lens. Now, some of the "one-touch" TAMRONs (e.g., 70-200mm f/2.8 MACRO, 90mm f/2.8 MACRO & 180mm f/3.5 MACRO) have a AF/MF engage switch, to stop the focusing ring from turning in your hand, as you hold the lens.
