Tamron 17-50mm Lens

I recieved it last weekend and took a few photos - all nice and sharp from my untrained eye and from a novice point of view.

However, I couldn't not find the button where it says AF/MF (auto/manual focus). Having not read the manual, I proceeded to hand-rotate (manual focus).

I then had a good look at the lens and the manual (the manual have an AF/MF button for this model- A16) but not present on the lens itself.

Heres what is written on the lens.

Aspherical LD XR DiII SP TAMRON AF 17-50mm 1:2:8 (IF) 67 (diameter - just added this) A16

Have I got the right one based on the link above or have I been duped.

most likely the manual is a generic manual. not all lenses have AF/MF swith on them. but the body does have an AF/MF switch. do not try to use the lens in MF mode without the body being set to MF if the lens does not have a MF switch.

But have I got the right lens from what I ordered from the link?

I understand that some do and some don't have the AF/MF on the body but should the lens I ordered have one.

If it meant for it not to have it, then I can live with that. But if it suppose to have the AF/MF button, then I'll exchange to the shop I purchased it from.

i do not have this lens but i'm sure someone that does can confirm. but i believe it is not supposed to have the AF/MF switch.

I've ordered from Crutchfield in the past and they give some good info on lenses. According to their review of the one you purchased, you have to switch the camera body to manual focus, then it'll work.

Canon mount only has the AF switch on the lens. The rest such as Pentax, Sony etc, have none.

No, you are correct.

Where the confusion really is that the newer lenses (e.g., SONY DT 50mm f/1.8, SONY DT 30mm f/2.8, SONY DT 55-200mm f/4-5.6 & SONY DT 18-55mm f/4-5.6) for the A230, A330 and A380 will have the AF/MF switch on them, because they include a focus motor in the lens, no longer relying on the screw drive in the camera body.

The AF/MF selector on the other SONY camera bodies simply disengages the screw motor and allows for free adjustment of the focus ring on the lens. Now, some of the "one-touch" TAMRONs (e.g., 70-200mm f/2.8 MACRO, 90mm f/2.8 MACRO & 180mm f/3.5 MACRO) have a AF/MF engage switch, to stop the focusing ring from turning in your hand, as you hold the lens.

Got myself a Sigma 105mm Macro the other day too. Havent really use it that much as hadn't much opportunity.

Anyone use/own this lens....for a tip?

Macro takes patience, keep at it!

The Sony 70-200/2.8 has full time MF while it's AFing, just grab the ring and turn it. I think you'll like it ;). But it also has a MF switch to turn off SSM focusing.

I love my Tamron 70-200mm!
