The need for one of these is kind of really dependent on the photographer. Obviously, the guy who owns it isn't too broken up about letting it go. That's a shame, too ... because you would think that if he went to all the trouble to buy it ... he more than likely had a reason. There aren't too many times I find myself reaching for this length, except for the nighttime football field shots. Definitely put the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 and the 70-400mm f/4-5.6 out to pasture, due to light issues. Unfortunately, it's too short for birding.
On an APS-C sensor ... it is effectively 450mm, with no zoom at all. Still ... nice optional lens.
Night time football games under the lights, the last half of soccer season the varsity game is under the lights. What about indoor basketball for the far half of the court, maybe a 200 would be better for that. With 300 I would think you would need to cameras one with the 300 and one wit something a bit less. Not enough reach for wildlife and don;t know how much you would 'need' 2.8 for wildlife.
I'd happily part with $300 for it.
It was a fairly overcast football game that made me so frustrated with the SAL75-300. If shot wide open to get a fairly fast shutter speed the pictures were super soft. Otherwise I couldn't get a fast enough shutter to even catch someone running, much less my sister-in-laws baton spinning.
Like all lenses of its' ilk, you need bright daylight to get anything decent.
That's how "they" work it. Get you hooked on something cheap, give you a taste of what might be possible and then flog you an expensive G type glass. Double whammy!
The Tokina lens went for $750. That's a far cry from $6000. LOL Real far! ;)
If it is really in good shape that is a steal. I guess the market is so small that the price works in the old eBay way, instead of the prevailing market prices we see on most photography related items on eBay.
