what does spot focus mean ?

center point.

ahhh...ok, i didnt know it was called anything specific.

it is called center point in the Sony menu. but i'm so used to calling it spot focus for some reason.

so if you select another AF point is it still called spot focus or is that term only used for the center point ?

There are 3 AF Modes:

1. "Wide" (Averages focus among all focus points)
2. "Spot" (narrow, centerpoint focus)
3. "Local" (where you use the joystick to select from 9 specific focus points)

Wide lets the body select it's own.
Center is just the central AF point.
Local is where you select the AF point using the joystick.
