You're assuming it was over-sharpened cause you can see the veins and pores?

In fact the image is back-focussed. The top back of the head is what is in focus. I got lucky with the rest because it was stopped down.
It was taken with my old Minolta 50mm f/1.7

You're exaggerating. It's not overly sharppened. It shows fine detail but not to the point where you got artifacts and random false detail (crap) all over.

It has IMPACT!

I loved it of course, however the wifey wasn't too amused by it all.

24.6MP can resolve a ton of detail! Unfortunately, if I got an A850, that's all I would be able to afford for the time being lol.

I have got a couple of shots like that that are extremely sharp. however when you soften them, it doesn't look good anymore.
I do soften portraits of women though just to give them a nicer skin texture and hide blemishes and acne!

So... you used two separate sharpening operations in processing the image yet it's not over-sharpened. Right.

Try those settings and see how much they effect your image!
