Trust an Ozzy to show a "cricket" at the moment :D
Oh well it's a nice shot anyway.
lets not go there...unless of course you'd like to. lol
I decided to take the E-M1 out for a real challenge, a concert at a local club. Usually I would have the XZ-2 which does well enough, but ISO 800 is about the limit for weird lighting under LED spots. The E-M1 is even better at 1600. Autofocus was good most of the time. Pretty impressed by the detail in the concert photos when the overall movement was not too great.
So far I like the EVF more than I expected. I have found that it is annoying when shooting action like moving birds. Now that might just be an artifact of my current settings. I have been leaving it in low speed burst. When I pan and take a few frames, then let up the 0.5 second review throws off my ability to continue tracking the bird. Guess I need to experiment with the setup more. I will have to start looking for a native m4/3rds tele-zoom. Need to wait to see the new Olympus pro due in a week or so. The old 4/3rds 70-300 is a good size fit, but the performance is not great. Too much hunting in autofocus, much more than on the E-5. The 50-200 SWD does much better, but the weight and size is not as good a fit. That said I thin that the bokeh on the 70-300 took a nose dive with the higher resolution and/or the lack of the AA filter on the E-M1. That said, the hawk came out well enough from the 70-300.
Nice atmosphere in the concert shot kg not tried any concerts yet with mine.
As you said the hawk looks fine. I've not tried my 70-300 yet, the others were rather iffy in their af I just haven't got round to trying it out as I thought it would be worse. I've turned the after shot review off on my E-M1. It took a bit of getting used to at first but it certainly frees up the shooting operation.
I've been wondering if I should get some more micro 4/3 lenses too. Brian on the e-system group website has been getting some terrific BiF shots with his micro 4/3 75-300 zoom so maybe that is the way to go.
awesome fun today using the wifi app
Just before he took after and chased my girly a$$ down the driveway. lol
Cool bee photos. I have played with the WIFI app enough to see the utility of it. I am it will prove useful night shots as a remote shutter. I will need to be doing some more experimenting over the next few weeks.
For now I am going to have to stay with my 4/3rds telephotos. I am seeing a lot of back and forth on the Olympus 75-300 vs. the Panasonic 100-300. Still would like a faster lens even if there is a weight penalty. I like that there is a third party tripod collar for the 100-300. If I get lucky I will find one that has a filter size I already own. The 12-40 was 62mm and not having anything that size cost me $300 extra for the core polarizer, UV and 4 stop ND.
Excellent shots Rooz. They look pretty angry to me.
Snow day here in Atlanta, well more of an ice day. Regardless it was a good chance to spend a sunny day with the 50-200 SWD on the E-M1. Still a little big for the camera, but every time I use this lens I remember how nice it is. Focus is decent on the E-M1, close to the E-5. I tried CF tracking mode once or twice and it worked ok, certainly better than the tracking ability of the E-5. When it hits focus the sensor in the E-M1 shines with this lens. Bokeh is much nicer than the 70-300. I am getting acclimated to the EVF. I have turned off the image review which makes manually tracking much easier. The one time it just felt wrong was trying to find the hawk overhead. panning around quickly trying to get it in the frame while slightly out of focus was difficult. Seemed like the slight smearing of the solid sky combined with panning tended to lower the contrast of the relatively small, dark bird making it hard to find.
I will be very interested in the 40-150 f2.8 pro lens when it comes out. I will have a hard time justifying it since I need all of those extra 50mm of the SWD for backyard birds. I did decide to breakdown and buy the current 40-150 kit lens since B&H is selling it for $120. My wife has a silver one for her E-PM1, but I cannot steal it all the time (and silver didn't look right). Maybe the rumored 1.4x teleconverter will show up soon...
