beautiful image.

Went walking around my building looking for something to shoot with my new D3000. Got this camera about 2 hours before this shot. This kit lens sucks the big one.

if the kit lens is the 18-55VR then, no it doesn't. i have that lens and its great, (for what it is).

Yes, it is the VR 18-55 DX. It isn't that great at shooting low light. I went to the local skateboard park and tried shooting some photos. Since I had to have the shutter speed extremely fast, all my pictures turned out way to dark. I am sure that getting a external flash would help things out a bunch, but my bundget isn't there quite yet. I would like to get a much better low light lens, possibly even a prime.

I have yet to shoot in the daytime with it though. Is it really a great lens though? I was under the impression that almost all kit lenses were pretty much useless.

Kit lenses are certainly not pro lenses by any stretch of the imagination but you are not paying $2000 for them either. Generally in reasonable light the Nikon kit lenses are very good value for what Nikon charge for them and way better than the equivalent offerings from Canon for example. You have to remember that kit lenses are exactly that, kit lenses they are designed to fulfil the needs of the widest possible user range at the minimum price to the manufacturer. If your requirements are specific, say low light, macro or wide angle then you need to look to other lenses that is presumably why you purchased a DSLR in the first place because of the ability to use multiple specialist lenses.

There is no way I would say that the Nikon kit lenses suck without qualification.

what you complaint about? this image looks pretty fine since this is indoors, like others told take kit lens for what it is worth.

btw, nice house you got, interesting interior mix.

it isnt a large aperture lens so in low light it will struggle purely for that reason. that has nothing to do with the quality of the images the lens produces though.

remember we're talking relative terms here. its a $150 lens. i'm by no means saying that its as good as $1000 lens but for what it is, it's pretty damn impressive.

if you want a good low light lens think about the cheap 35mm f1.8DX. great lens in low light cos you can improve your shutter speed and lower you iso.
