View Full Version : How about night shots?

ok, my oly c750uz is not the best camera for night shots as it can only get 'decent' shots at iso100 or lower because of the noise issue. nevertheless, allow me to start this thread. i'm sure you guys have hundreds of night shots specially those living in the cities.

wow lots of lighting

did you use a tripod? or was it handheld

the think about olympus is you can use higher isos without noise

wonder why

my cousin has an olympus and her photo was at 320 iso showed no signs of noise at all

Nice night shots explorer. That first one is a good Pisa shot (as in Leaning Tower Of :)).

Here is Trafalgar Square by night:

Explorer - Don't under estimate the Power of an Olympus C-750, and don't under sell your abilities to get good photos!
Gerard - nicely exposed shot - got that believable look to it that I like - I mean it looks 'for real' unlike so many night shots that just look cool but slightly artificial.
Here's one of my more recent shots - China Town SF from my Son's School trip.

Just curious what settings did you use? The moving people are still in focus.

Thanks

wow! did you take that with your oly c740uz? perfect lighting! probably i haven't pushed my c750uz that much the way you did to your c740.

here's another night shot with nothing but oly c750uz :D the shadows are my wife and i when we were having a good time in boracay island (philippines) last january :D

explorer - actually - that one was the A-200, but the C-740 does a very good job too. I have taken some tricky concert type pics, on the C-740, at my sons school using either Manual White or tungsten white - at 400 asa with pretty impressive results. The A-200 was very new to me when I topok that shot - so I was experimenting a bit.
Todd - I'm viewing at work - so I can't remember the setting - but it was around 1/15th sec @F2.8 hand held but steadied a bit and utilising the Anti Shake.
Thanks for the comments guys.

Here's the first attempt of a night shot taken with my (then new) D70 and 28-80mm Nikkor.

This is how it fell out of the camera.
I must get back up there to do some more a little earlier in the evening.

Cold Snail - a stunning shot of Tower Bridge!
Explorer - I love your shot with the shadows in the foreground
Me? Right now I don't have many Digital Night shots - but I have some holidays coming soon so I will be playing!!
Here's one of a set I took in Croydon a few months back - with the A-200...
(The orig is better at 8mp)

I have always loved night shots, but they seem difficult to get the right lighting. Great job to everyone here!

explorer - well done with what I imagine must have been quite a tricky exosure - I assume from your shots you are well versed with the C-750 - my C-740 is basicall a cheaper version, no hotshoe, 3.2mp, only 100 asa - 400asa
otherwise virtually identical - I know as I have at least one friend with one. Happy to comare notes with you.
This is a C-740 night shot 2004 November 5th time
400ASA, F2.8,1/13thsec tweaked the colour a bit after as i didn't yuse the manual white

I'll add one of the Bellagio in Las Vegas. I set the 350D/XT on a ledge for support and lightly touched the shutter release button:

I took this pic on a recent trip to Shanghai. It was a smoggy night hence the fogginess in the picture. Taken with the Canon 50 1.8 II lens.

I know the picture looks shaky but that's because it was hand held and there were a lot of ppl around :)

This thread is pretty old. These night threads don't get much action I guess. Here are a couple from last weekend.

I think the Lights in the Night thread (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13373&page=29) has seen the light of day a little more than this one (last post in 2005?)

Looks like you're having fun with those starry apertures! I've been wanting to try a night shot turning the moon into a starry light. Lately though I haven't taken night shots, they're difficult to set up if you're not in a well-lit area. Great work here.

Thanks! IIRC, I focused down toward the street in the foreground, but I imagine that focus was at infinity, so it probably didn't make too much difference. As much as I hated that Tamron lens (which I've since retired), it has actually captured some decent shots for me...
